Site progress on Gothenburg Grand Central
Site visit unveils primary structure at Gothenburg Grand Central
This video from the construction site showcases in situ cast arches using eco-concrete made with slag from the steel industry. The structure is a hybrid of eco-concrete and CLT. The choice of material reflects the client, Jernhusen's, ambition to achieve BREEAM Outstanding certification for the project while managing tight structural requirements due to the underground train tunnel.
The arches serve as architectural elements both in the exterior facade and in the interior spaces. Spanning up to 25 meters, they distribute the building weight to points on either side of an underlying railway tunnel. To minimize CO2 emission, the building has been designed consistently with sustainable materials from early phase.
The building is constructed with:
- 100% reused brick facade, more precisely 524,000 pcs.
- Eco-concrete produced with slag from steel industry
- Minimized steel structure by using CLT
- 24 ton recycled steel and 19 ton Zero-steel
- More than 80% of the facade glass in recycled glass
- 100% re-used cable ladders
- 50% re-used ventilation pipes
Gothenburg Grand Central Station is expected to open in late 2026.
