Rogaland Teater & Stavanger Museum

Stavanger, Norway

«Alt henge samen» brings Rogaland Theater and Stavanger Museum together to create a new shared cultural heart for Stavanger and Rogaland. Rooted in the understanding that theater gives form to the present while the museum carries our collective memory, the project weaves these two perspectives into a living public place where past, present and future meet.

More than a building, the project is an invitation to the city: a place for encounter, learning, reflection and shared experience across generations. By opening up culture to everyday life and creating generous spaces for both programmed and informal use, the complex strengthens Stavanger’s role as a regional cultural centre and makes art, history and knowledge more accessible to all. Tradition and renewal come together in a unified architectural structure that connects people, institutions and the city itself—reflecting a belief that culture is something we create together, and that it belongs at the very heart of urban life.

The project is rooted in the distinctive landscape and cultural history of Kannik-hill. Listed buildings are preserved and activated through new uses, while new architecture is added with a calm, timeless geometry that strengthens the whole without competing with the existing structures. The result is a clear and cohesive ensemble in which function, form and place are closely intertwined.

A shared, open foyer forms the heart of the building and acts as a “third space” for the city, accessible beyond performance and museum opening hours. Here, theater, museum and shared functions are brought together in an inviting public room. The theater component comprises three flexible stages with efficient backstage organization and strong audience experience, including a dedicated focus on children’s and youth theater. The museum offers contemporary, adaptable exhibition spaces, clear visitor circulation and secure facilities for collections management at an international standard.

Shared use of foyers, public areas, staff facilities and outdoor spaces ensures efficient use of space and strengthens collaboration between the institutions. The project is technically robust, economically efficient and environmentally ambitious, with a strong emphasis on reuse, energy-efficient systems and integrated blue-green infrastructure.

The project is a forward-looking and sustainable cultural building that unites theater, museum and city into a single, living whole.
