Slemmestad, Norway

Norcemkaia

Situated 35 minutes south of Oslo, the former cement factory in Slemmestad is to be transformed into a vibrant and urban district. With the introduction of a new electric ferry, a larger part of the Oslo fjord is connected to the city. This opens for a much easier and calmer commute, and Slemmestad is now only a short boat ride away from Oslo.

Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter’s approach to the project is to create robust and elegant buildings, rooted in the special geography and geology in Slemmestad. The project seeks to create good spaces with human scale, inspired by the coastal towns of Norway. A higher density with narrow streets opens up opportunities for urban quality, both on sun filled summer evenings and chilly winter mornings. Active facades, and a plethora of meeting points will engage the area and create a lively neighborhood.

The project proposes high-quality apartments and commercial spaces of varying sizes, along with enticing urban spaces. It springs from the juxtaposition between the lush nature of the area and the new urban development in the rest of Slemmestad. The buildings are placed in respect to the topography of the site and will be teeming with both vegetation and life.

The architecture is rooted in the historical and site specific, with a modern touch. A variance in shapes, heights and materiality ensures an inviting and interesting project with the ambition to become an attraction in the region.
