Turufjell in Flå is one of Norway's newest mountain destinations at the feet of the Vassfaret national park. In connection with the ski resort, Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter has undertaken the creation of a new mountain village called Turutun, which will offer a collection of holiday apartments, picturesque squares, and vibrant shops. The concept for the village is anchored by a commitment to compact, nature-preserving design, and seeks to establish an immersive year-round haven that creates a sense of community and a deep connection with the surrounding natural landscape, all while reining in urban sprawl.
The architectural vision references traditional settlements, with clusters of buildings nestled together at the ski slope’s base. The village features a variety of terrains and land-uses, from semi-private courtyards to private terraces and fully common areas, with expanses of untouched natural landscape scattered throughout. The design features terraced outdoor areas and building silhouettes, to allow unobstructed views of the surrounding green from all locations and orientations.
Considering the surge in demand for holiday homes, it is our responsibility to ensure that our expansion respects the untouched natural surroundings, reigns in urban sprawl, and remains deeply integrated within the local community. Drawing inspiration from traditional building methods, the design artfully incorporates elements of mountain architecture, which keeps an eye on sustainable design principles.
Village life has always meant looking inward, toward your neighbors and close community, in order to embrace and appreciate the world that exists outside. The mutual support and reliance dictated by compact living encourages a more respectful relationship with the natural surroundings, and that is what we hope for with Turutun. We strive to create a destination where people can come together and find comfort and security in their small village, while experiencing the beauty of the vast, untouched natural world just beyond their doorstep.
